Tinkelman Architecture was tasked with designing a major addition to the dining concourse at Rocking Horse Ranch, a local landmark resort to the Hudson Valley. The addition extends the dining space outward to align with the existing entrance porch, creating an opportunity to join the two architectural features with a large patio. A new timber framed porte-cochère was constructed over the existing drive, which is flanked by a small addition for new office space.
By referencing the styles of Adirondack and rustic ranch architecture, as well as the dynamic roof forms and exposed timber of the existing structure, our team was able to produce a sensitive response to both the existing structure and site. The addition leverages the site's sun path, using a broad array of windows to invite natural light into the dining space - this experience is further enhanced by the double-height portion of the addition, which uses clerestory windows to further envelope the concourse with natural light.
