Longtime Hudson Valley Resident Brings 37 Years of Experience to Firm

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (July 15, 2022) – Donald J. Petruncola, an award-winning architect with 37 years of experience designing buildings throughout the Hudson Valley and New York State, has been hired as Director of Architectural Services for Tinkelman Architecture in Poughkeepsie.

Petruncola brings a broad spectrum of skills that extend beyond design to include project management, client communications and marketing. At Tinkelman, he will be involved in all aspects of design while managing personnel, marketing the firm and exploring ways to further expand the company.

“Don is an ideal addition to our team at Tinkelman,” said Steven Tinkelman, the company founder and managing member. “His extraordinary design skills are matched by his deep institutional knowledge of the Hudson Valley and his ability to manage projects, communicate with clients and realize their visions. He is talented, thoughtful, intelligent and passionate about what he does.”

Petruncola’s expertise in design spans a wide array of projects including college buildings, museums, libraries, municipal and office headquarters, multiple dwelling buildings, religious structures and historic restoration projects. He is widely recognized for his ability to create inviting and highly functional public spaces.

“Good architecture produces a beautiful building, but its core goal is to serve the client,” Petruncola said. “The direction and the focus of the process involves establishing and nurturing a relationship with the client and helping realize their goals and dreams.”

He most recently served as senior associate at Liscum McCormack VanVoorhis Architects, a Poughkeepsie-based firm he joined in 1996. He previously spent three years as senior architect for Clark Patterson Mossien in Newburgh after beginning his career at Remick Architects and Planners of New Windsor. He started his career as an intern in 1986 upon early graduation from the Syracuse University School of Architecture.

Petruncola won awards from the American Institute of Architects in 1995 and 2000, the Preservation League of New York State in 1999 and the New York State Historic Preservation Office in 2002. His work has been published for notable design in 1990 and 2001 with American School & University, a publication covering the design, construction and operation of educational buildings.

In his civic life, he serves as president of the Mid-Hudson Animal Aid in Beacon, a sanctuary for abandoned and abused cats throughout the Hudson Valley and beyond. He began volunteering with the animal shelter more than 30 years ago and has been on the Board of Directors for 28 years.

As many buildings as he has designed or participated in, he is always looking forward.

“The project that I am always most interested in is the next project,” he said. “The new one that is coming is the most exciting.”
